Subject: Preventing False High PSA

Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 23:19:35 -0700

From: john warr johnwarr@gte.net

A University of Michigan study of 64 healthy men ages 49 to 79 showed that ejaculation within 48 hours of PSA tests boosted PSA levels by an average of 41 percent. (US News)

In the book, "The Patient's Guide To Prostate Cancer", the author states that "PSA is also elevated following any activity or exercise that results in stress to the rectum or the perineum". He gives examples of a bicyclist and a sailing vessel crew worker with PSAs over 70 that turned out to be due solely to exercise and work related "buttocks stress".
