Hyperthermia treatments are utilized both alone and in conjunction with radiation. Heat is applied to the prostate via microwaves coming from a cigar-box-like device placed between the man's legs or over his abdomen. No one knows quite how heat kills cancer, but the treatment is known to be effective.
